Ex-gangster seeks redemption, finds purpose in helping the disabled

After spending six years behind bars, former gangster A. Muraly was determined to turn over a new leaf and make his father proud. In 1998, the 49-year-old formed an NGO called Tamilan Helping Hands, whose members carry wheelchair-bound devotees up the 272 steps of the Batu Caves temple to pray at the shrine during Thaipusam.
