The Housing and Local Government Ministry plans to nominate recipients of the 2026 Cleaning Workers Award for state honours in recognition of their contributions to keeping public spaces clean.
Speaking at the 2026 Cleaning Workers Appreciation Day on Tuesday (Aug 18), Minister Nga Kor Ming said the proposal was discussed with ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Wira M Noor Azman Taib to ensure the workers received due recognition.
He said cleaning workers played a vital role in keeping the country's environment clean, safe and comfortable, despite often working behind the scenes, and stressed that maintaining public cleanliness was a shared responsibility and not solely that of cleaning workers.
