Efforts to uphold Malay as the country’s official language should not be seen as undermining proficiency in other languages, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

Speaking at the Ambang Merdeka Sahabat MADANI 2026 highlight programme at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Permatang Pauh on Saturday (Aug 29), he said all Malaysians should have a good command of the national language while continuing to strengthen their proficiency in English, Mandarin and Tamil to expand educational and economic opportunities.

Anwar also urged Malaysians not to sow racial hostility, stressing that national harmony must be continuously nurtured through a spirit of sharing, caring and helping one another.
