TNB’s excess profits redistributed to consumers via industry fund, Parliament told

Despite a recent 14.2% hike in electricity tariffs, Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s (TNB) profit margin remains capped at 7.3%, with any excess returned to consumers via the Electricity Industry Fund (QI).
Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir told the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Aug 13) that the structure, in place since 2018, balances TNB’s financial stability and service quality with fair returns to shareholders.
Responding to Lim Guan Eng’s (PH–Bagan) suggestion to stagger tariff hikes to ease the burden on businesses, Akmal stressed that regulatory measures ensure excess profits are channelled back to consumers.
