Tarpaulin and screens conceal much of the semi-detached house in Taman Yarl, Kuala Lumpur, but next-door neighbour Uma Devi Panchacharam, 52, has a clear view from her bedroom of prayer rituals, open flames and smoke rising just metres from her window.

Almost nine months after Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said it would act “soon”, residents claim the house continues to be used as an unauthorised tokong.
