Significant shortage of dietitians at clinics nationwide, says Health PSSC chief

Government health clinics face a severe shortage of dietitians, with only 120 professionals serving 1,100 clinics—half of which lack access to such expertise—limiting efforts to tackle disease-related malnutrition, says Suhaizan Kaiat (PH-Kulai).

Briefing the Dewan Rakyat on the PSSC report on Enhancing Food Policy and Nutritional Intervention on Wednesday (Feb 25), the Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) on Health chairman warned that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes are widespread, with over half of adults affected and more than 500,000 suffering multiple NCDs concurrently.

The committee proposed scrapping sugar subsidies, introducing a minimum tax on sugary drinks, and strengthening health education to curb unhealthy diets, particularly amid widespread social media misinformation.
