A two-year-old girl was rescued from the clutches of a man who held her hostage and was shot dead after a five-hour standoff in a four-storey flat at Telipok Ria apartments in Tuaran, Sabah on Sunday.
The girl, who was not identified, suffered a cut to her neck and was sent to a hospital.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said police believe the unidentified suspect could be mentally unstable or on drugs.

Meanwhile, the girl's grandmother Sharmala Mohd Akhir said the suspect was not known to the family and has denied that revenge was the motive behind the incident.

The girl's aunt Nor Fatihah Nasir, said when the incident happened the child's mother was at home and only realised what had happened after being notified by a neighbour that her daughter had been abducted.
