There is no need to introduce the death penalty into the Road Transport Act 1987 for offences involving driving under the influence, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Speaking to reporters on Monday (April 13), Loke said existing laws are sufficient to prosecute serious cases, with offenders still able to be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder where applicable.

He said the government is considering amendments to strengthen support for victims’ families, including mandatory compensation from offenders, adding that the proposed amendments are expected to be tabled in the upcoming Dewan Rakyat session in June.
