A mayoral candidate in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz was shot dead on Sunday (May 11) night.

Yesenia Lara Gutierrez, the Morena party’s candidate for local government in Texistepec, was greeting supporters after a campaign rally when gunmen on motorcycles opened fire.
