E-commerce fraud made up the highest number of scams during the movement control order (MCO) period, with such victims losing about RM17mil in that timeframe, the Dewan Rakyat had been told.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Mohamed Said told Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (BN-Baling) during Question Time in Dewan Rakyat on Monday, adding that there were five types of scams that the authorities and police viewed as serious.

Asked why authorities still had not curbed such syndicates, Ismail said that the police have formed several taskforces with Bank Negara Malaysia, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Cybersecurity Malaysia, financial institutions and telecommunication industry players.

Asked on the possible abuse of information on the MySejahtera app and private data by private companies, Ismail assured that the app still has to abide by the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
