The Federal Court on Friday imposed a stunning fine of half a million ringgit on news portal Malaysiakini after finding it guilty of contempt of court over readers’ comments that criticised the judiciary in an article it posted in June last year.

Court of Appeal president Justice Rohana Yusuf said

“Ultimately, Malaysiakini is the owner of the portal. It has full control over what it has published,” she said.

After the court decision, Malaysiakini editor-in-chief said the hefty fine was not just to punish the portal but was also possibly an attempt to shut them down.
