Japan says investigation ongoing into shopping mall explosion after Kumamoto quake

Japan said on Wednesday (July 29) that authorities are investigating an explosion at an Aeon shopping mall following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday (July 28).

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said firefighters and police detected the smell of gas inside the building during search operations, but stressed that the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
