Institute of Medical Research (IMR) Virology Unit head Dr T. Ravindran said the institute is studying the use of ‘early morning saliva’ and ‘deep throat saliva’ to be used as samples to detect COVID-19, to replace samples currently taken from the nose and throat.

It’s self-collection method, if proven successful, will help in minimizing the use for personal protection equipment (PPE) in the long run.

Ravindran was speaking to reporters at an online engagement session with the media hosted by the Health Ministry on Friday.
