ABOUT MAZLINA:
Mazlina Rajman, a 47-year-old single mum, had her final chemotherapy session this year. She first learned she had breast cancer in 2007. After a mastectomy on her left breast, and nine chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions in a year, her cancer went into remission. But she knew it could return. “Anyone who has cancer knows that fear,” she says.

Mazlina was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in 2015, which had spread to her lungs. She went for six more chemotherapy sessions and is now on hormone replacement therapy for the rest of her life. After nine years of battling cancer, she knows the probabilities: a woman’s chance of surviving advanced breast cancer is five years.

Mazlina now makes it a point to cherish every little thing in her life – going for coffee with friends, shopping for groceries on her own, and most of all, activities with her 15-year-old daughter Hani Maisarah Nasaruddin. Hani knows the seriousness of her mum’s situation. Mazlina has been frank about it when both women have talked about breast cancer.

“She has a lot to deal with. She knows I may not have long to live, but she tells me that I have to be strong,” says Mazlina, whose husband died when Hani was two-years-old. “She has to accept God’s will and be thankful for what she has. These are the principles I live by.”
